Monaco is considered the jewel in the Riviera and is a short train trip from Nice, perfect for a day trip. In stark contrast to Nice, Monaco streets have steep gradient so it was an easy decision to purchase a hop on hop off bus ticket for the day. The bus went to the majority of the interesting locations and enabled quick passage compared to what would be long difficult walks. While waiting for the bus there was an opportunity to explore the area around Monte Carlo casino and the view of the marina. Monaco is a very clean country and even has gardeners sweeping the leaves in the Jardin. The range of cars and motor bikes on offer through out Monte Carlo was eye watering.

The first stop of the day was the historic quarter where the Palace is located. Walking around the narrow streets we spent time in a garden on the top of a cliff, viewed the church Grace Kelly was married in and time shopping in the old town. When finished, it was perfect time to watch the changing of the guard and then catch the bus again.

Next stop was an opportunity to explore the start / finish line for the F1 track and some lunch. With the drizzling becoming heavier we decided to catch the bus again. We hopped off to view a small chapel that dated back to 1070. Lamenting the prospect of walking back up to the train station we stumbled onto a walk way that thankfully had several series of escalators back to the train station saving us at least 45 minutes of hiking up the hills. We had time for a coffee and chaud chocolat at the station before catching the train back to Nice.
